Project Managers

Matrix HG’s highly-qualified project managers and estimators manage a range of mission-critical processes including estimating, sales, business development, project management, purchasing, communications, scheduling, permitting, and others. Our project managers work closely with their customers, engineers, field installation crews, subcontractors, and all other project team members to ensure timely completion of all deliverables from concept to completion.

William “Billy” Buzzard

Operations Manager

William “Billy” Buzzard joined Matrix HG in 2005 and was promoted to Operations Manager in 2014. William oversees the company’s project managers, job superintendents, operational and support staff, as well as the complex HVAC projects they execute. He is responsible for efficient process management at Matrix, fostering timely and constructive communication among teams, evaluating team members’ performance, and ensuring customer satisfaction, peak quality, and job efficiency from every angle. William oversees schedules, analyzes workflow, and provides tools to improve processes throughout the service side of the organization.

William provides a supporting role to the Sales and Estimating Department, reviewing bids, assigning Project Managers, and contributing scheduling and job sequencing in the job bidding process. William directly controls and manages the Operations Department budget.

In his decade with Matrix, William has worked on and managed many of the company’s projects for high-profile client Pacific Gas & Electric. As one of California’s largest energy providers, PG&E naturally has rigorous requirements with respect to timely delivery, cost management, quality of workmanship, technical expertise, and innovation. William remarks, “The PG&E projects [of which I have been a part] have enabled me to perform highly-detailed and tightly-coordinated design-build mechanical prime projects that have allowed myself and Matrix to grow.”

William holds his own performance to the highest practical and ethical standards. He exemplifies consistency, timeliness, and resourcefulness in his approach to client needs, job requirements, facility impact, and budgets.

On what his clients value most about Matrix, William lists, “…customer service; the ability to overcome obstacles and complete projects; the fact that we stand by our clients and resolve any issue that arises; our strong work ethics; our team mentality. What’s most important to our customers is that we provide results.”

William worked as a field electrician before joining Matrix. He is a Certified Electrician, a Local 342 Refrigeration Pipe Fitter, and has completed SMACNA leadership and project management training.

Project Manager

As one of the younger members of the Matrix team, Project Manager Mark Smith still has 15 years in the mechanical engineering industry. His career started with JMT Mechanical as an HVAC technician. After being in the field for several years he then moved to Southland Industries as an HVAC Account Manager before joining Matrix as Project Manager.

Mark’s management style is very detail-oriented, and he says, “My desk is so clean, you’d think no one works here.” Yet he manages more than half a dozen projects at a time, both from the office and in the field, and keeps a close eye on the progress, safety, and quality on each job, anticipating and addressing new challenges as they arise.

Even with his decade-and-a-half experience in the HVAC business, Mark values the expertise of his team members at Matrix; he appreciates the culture of collaboration and unflagging commitment to customer service. “Each customer at Matrix is everyone’s customer, and the collaboration of the team means that every problem is solved in the best way possible.”

Mark remarks that the things his customers value most about Matrix HG are “craftsmanship and reliability.”

Mark Smith earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Construction Management with a minor in Business Administration from California State University at Chico.


Project Manager

Seth Thomas joined the Matrix HG team in May 2014 with 18 years’ industry experience.

Seth began his career with ACCO Engineered Systems in 1996, starting as a service technician/journeyman on large tonnage to fractional tonnage air- and water-cooled systems. His role at ACCO expanded to supporting a top-producing service sales project manager, surpassing his goals in estimating, scope development, and managing the firm’s preventative maintenance base. His effectiveness in this capacity resulted in increased job profitability, volume, and backlog for the project manager.

In 2010, Seth became a Project Manager/Estimator with Structural & Refrigeration Mechanical, Inc. For the next four years, he was responsible for managing projects, estimating, and building a preventative maintenance base, eventually being promoted to Operations Manager.

In his role at Matrix HG, Inc., Seth manages all facets of projects after contracts are executed. He schedules labor and sub-contractors and works directly with customers in matters of scheduling and job operations. He also oversees submittal and procurement of materials and equipment for the jobs he manages.
